Coming from a filmy musical background with established people in the Industry, was is of any advantage for you?
Advantage in learning, yes, but not in any other way. Even when I started out as an assistant to Salim-Sulaiman, Sandeep Chowta, Pritam and others, I went without taking my surname. They use to only see my work. Eventually they would get to know about me that I am Anu Malik’s nephew & Daboo Malik’s son, but that is something I am not even rubbing onto. I don’t use my surname to get any work. At the end of the day, if you have a good song, anyone will buy it, today it has become like that.”
Did watching your father & uncle work inspire you to get into Bollywood?
I was growing up in a very filmy music atmosphere and have seen my dad & uncle do music all their life and since childhood, I have been learning western music. So I had influences of both. But at around 15-16 years of age, I had composed a tune and played it to my dad. He told me it has got a very filmy vibe to it, so you can do film music. That’s when I thought maybe I can, let’s work towards it. I was learning music since I was 8 years, but it was around 15-16 that I made my first song & started thinking that lets get into this.”
”Acting is for Himesh sir to do, not me. Only he can do it”
So was Bollywood always on your wish list?
Yes, always. Bollywood was there since a young age only.
Multitasking has become a fad now. People are composing, singing & acting as well, so do we see you singing or acting in the future?
No acting, I am not going to do that. Acting is for Himesh sir to do, not me. Only he can do it, I cannot risk that. I am happy doing music. If I come across a song and I feel I can sing well, I’ll sing it. This year there is no song that I am singing, but maybe next year if I am doing some song and I feel I’ll sing it well, I will definitely sing. Singing is there, but no acting. Maybe I will feature in music videos if I feel, but not acting for any movie, there is no chance for that. I am a very lazy person; I can never get up on time and do anything on time.
Who has been your inspiration?
I have grown up listening to really different music. You can say there is R.D Burman, Hans Zimmer- the background scorer from the west, Pritam (Chakraborty), A. R. Rahman, all these people. I have worked under Salim-Sulaiman, they have mentored me, so you know, all these people have an influence on me. But, someone whose music I really admire and has done a really good job is Pritam. I like the way for 10 years he has given hit-pe-hit. That is a very big task for any music director to live up to. Pritam is someone I’d look up to.
You experimented with Arijit Singh, who hasn’t sung too many peppy numbers in ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’ and it worked. What do you have to say about that?
Lucky me. Actually I was the one to fight and say that I wanted Arijit Singh. He has not sung many peppy numbers and that was the main reason I wanted him to sing this. You would expect a typical dance track singer, who has sung many songs of this genre, I didn’t want that. I wanted someone who hasn’t sung any dance track, like this clubby track, Arjiit hasn’t sung only. When I called him for this song he was shocked and he said, ‘you called me for this?’ He was like I am happy, this is something new & fresh that I am going to try for the first time. He was also very excited. His forte is great love songs, no doubt, but we are all artists and we want to do something new every time and people have loved his voice in this song. He was happy that I had not called him for a regular song that he is regularly called for. People have loved Arijit’s voice. So I was lucky that my experiment worked.”
Is there any singer you’d like to compose for?
Ya, I’d like to make Shreya Ghoshal & Sunidhi Chauhan sing for me.
Any actor you want to sing or compose for?
Not really. I am happy with Salman Khan only featuring in my song. He is the only actor I really like. So I have no such wishes. If you are saying someone who I would like to work with, I would love to work with Aditya Chopra as a director.
Does the music help the film in its success?
Now-a-days, even if 2-3 songs do well, the opening of the film is supposedly decent. If the music is good, people do tend to go and see the film. If the music is done well, it’s like a bonus, it helps the film. If you see the music of a film like YAARIYAN, it was just amazing. The film had only newcomers, no star, it still did really well and the whole credit of that goes to the music. And if a film is well-made, then there is no stopping it.
‘Madhur Bhandarkar’s CALENDAR GIRLS is a film I am looking forward to’
EK PAHELI LEELA is described as a musical thriller. Tell us something about your music in the film.
I have done something really different in EK PAHELI LEELA. I am doing a Sunny Leone item song and also one very different love song which has two versions- one is like a contemporary modern version & the other one is like a Rajasthani folk, Indian version. So I am trying everything different in every film that I am doing. The music of LEELA should be out in a week or so.
Your forthcoming projects…
CALENDAR GIRLS with Madhur Bhandarkar is a film I am looking forward to. I have 6-7 films, but this is one of the closest projects to my heart. Now EK PAHELI LEELA is coming, MASTIZAADE with Sunny Leone again and Pritish Nandy Communications. Then there is HERO with Sooraj Pancholi, JUNOONIYAT with Pulkit Samrat & Yami Gautam, SANAM RE which is Divya Khosla Kumar’s film starring Pulkit Samrat, Yami Gautam & Urvashi Rautela. But as of now, I am really excited for CALENDAR GIRLS, that is something that I’ve been really wanting to do because I have been doing too many dance tracks and that is going to be my first emotional melodic song which Arijit (Singh) has sung. That will show a different side of my music.
